They were outstanding. Super responsive without talking to some robot to schedule. They shot right over to the house right away when our AC wasn't working. You want to use them for super quick and great service!
Great company to work with! I felt like they were fair and honest. They were great at communicating with me and getting out to our place fast and working around our schedule! Will be using them again in the future!
I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.
We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁
Quick response time, very knowledgeable, and great pricing. I definitely will be calling vortex next time!
I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Common Walk-In Cooler Repair Questions
We understand that a broken walk-in cooler is a high-stress situation. Our goal is to provide clear answers to your questions about the repair process. Below are answers to frequent and urgent inquiries.
A walk-in cooler that is not maintaining a safe temperature (at or below 40-41°F) is a critical emergency. The causes can range from simple to complex. One of the first things a technician will check is the coils. A dirty or blocked condenser coil on the roof cannot release heat, which will prevent the system from cooling. Likewise, an evaporator coil inside the box that is encased in a solid block of ice will not be able to cool the air. These are very common issues that can be caused by a lack of maintenance.
If the coils are clean and free of ice, the problem could be with the refrigeration system itself. The most common issue is a refrigerant leak. If the system is low on refrigerant, it will lose its capacity to cool. Our technicians can find and repair leaks and recharge the system. The problem could also be mechanical. The evaporator or condenser fan motors could have failed, or the compressor itself could be failing. Our technician will test all these components to find the point of failure.
Other potential causes include a faulty thermostat that is not calling for cooling correctly, a stuck or failed solenoid valve in the refrigerant line, or an electrical issue like a bad contactor that is not sending power to the compressor. Because a temperature problem can have so many potential causes, it is essential to have a qualified technician perform a professional diagnosis. We will quickly and accurately find the root of the problem to protect your inventory.
Yes, a thick, solid buildup of ice on the evaporator coil inside your walk-in cooler is a very bad sign. While a thin layer of white frost is normal, a heavy accumulation of ice is an indication of a problem that is preventing your cooler from working properly. The ice acts as an insulator, blocking the flow of air through the coil’s fins. This means the fans cannot blow cold air into the box, and the temperature inside your cooler will start to rise, even though the coil itself is a block of ice.
This excessive ice buildup is usually caused by a problem with the defrost system or by excess moisture entering the cooler. Most walk-in coolers use an “air defrost” cycle, where the compressor shuts off for a period of time and the fans circulate the cooler’s air (which is above 32°F) to melt the frost. If the defrost timer fails or is set incorrectly, the coil will never get a chance to clear itself. A failed evaporator fan motor can also cause this problem, as it prevents air from moving across the coil to melt the frost.
Another major cause is warm, humid air constantly entering the cooler. This is most often due to a torn door gasket or a door that is not closing and sealing properly. This constant influx of moisture overloads the system and freezes on the coil faster than the defrost cycle can remove it. Our technicians will diagnose the reason for the ice buildup, whether it is a failed component or a door seal issue, and perform the necessary repair.
Water leaking onto the floor from a walk-in cooler is a common problem that creates a dangerous slip hazard and can damage your flooring. The most frequent cause of these leaks is a clogged condensate drain line. As the evaporator coil cools the air, it removes moisture, which drips into a collection pan under the coil. This water is then supposed to flow out of the box through a drain line. If this line becomes clogged with slime, mold, or debris, the pan will overflow, and water will leak onto the floor. Our technicians can quickly and easily clear the clog to resolve the leak.
Another potential cause is related to an iced-up evaporator coil. If the coil freezes into a solid block of ice due to a defrost problem, it can sometimes cause the ice to melt in strange patterns or to overwhelm the drain pan when the system finally does shut off. This can lead to water spilling out of the pan and onto the floor. In this case, fixing the source of the icing problem is necessary to stop the leak.
The drain line itself can also be the problem. If it was not installed with the proper downward slope, it may not drain correctly. It could also have a crack or a loose fitting somewhere along its run. Our technicians will perform a thorough inspection of the entire condensate removal system, from the pan to the drain termination point, to find the exact source of the leak and provide a permanent repair.
If the condensing unit for your walk-in cooler is running constantly and never seems to shut off, it is a sign that the system is working very hard but is unable to reach its target temperature. This is a serious issue that will cause extremely high energy bills and will lead to the premature death of your very expensive compressor. This symptom can have several causes. The most likely culprit is a dirty condenser coil. A coil that is clogged with dirt and debris cannot dissipate heat, forcing the system to run non-stop in a futile attempt to cool down.
A refrigerant leak is another very common cause. As the system loses its refrigerant charge, its cooling capacity diminishes. To compensate, the system will have to run for longer and longer periods to try and maintain the temperature. Eventually, it will not be able to keep up at all and will just run constantly. Our technicians can find and repair the leak and restore the proper refrigerant charge.
A bad door gasket or a door that is not sealing properly can also cause the system to run constantly. The constant infiltration of warm air creates a continuous cooling load that the system can never satisfy. A faulty thermostat or a stuck-open solenoid valve could also cause this issue. It is critical to address this problem quickly. Our technicians will diagnose the reason for the constant run time and perform the repair needed to restore normal operation and protect your compressor.
Yes, repairing a faulty walk-in cooler door is a common and very important service we provide. A door that does not seal correctly is a major source of energy waste and can compromise the safety of your food products. We can address a wide range of door issues. Often, the problem lies with worn-out or damaged door gaskets. We can replace old, torn, or flattened gaskets to restore a perfect, airtight seal. This simple repair can have a huge impact on your cooler’s performance and efficiency.
The problem may also be with the door’s hardware. The heavy-duty hinges on a walk-in door can become loose or worn over time, causing the door to sag and not align properly with the frame. We can often adjust, repair, or rebuild the hinges to correct the alignment. The door closer mechanism is another common failure point. If the door is not closing automatically, we can repair or replace the closer to ensure the door does not get left open by busy staff.
We can also fix or replace broken door handles and latches. And we will always verify the functionality of the internal safety release mechanism. Sometimes the problem is not the door itself but the door frame or the threshold. Whatever the issue, our technicians can diagnose the problem with your walk-in door and perform the necessary repairs to ensure it closes easily, seals tightly, and operates safely.
In the vast majority of cases, a walk-in cooler can be successfully and cost-effectively repaired. Most failures are due to a single component, such as a fan motor, a thermostat, or a valve. Replacing these individual components is far less expensive than replacing the entire walk-in cooler system. Our goal is always to repair your existing equipment whenever it is feasible and makes financial sense for your business. We are experts at diagnosing component-level failures and performing targeted repairs.
The major exception to this is a catastrophic compressor failure, especially on an older system. The compressor is the most expensive single component, and replacing it is a major, labor-intensive job. If your cooler is more than 10-12 years old and the compressor fails, the cost of the repair may approach a significant fraction of the cost of a new, more energy-efficient refrigeration system. In this scenario, it is often more prudent to invest in a full replacement.
Another situation where replacement might be better than repair is if the insulated box itself is failing. If the panels are damaged, corroded, or water-logged, they lose their insulating value, and the box can no longer hold temperature efficiently. In this case, no amount of repair to the refrigeration system will solve the problem. Our technicians will always give you an honest and transparent assessment. We will provide a clear quote for the repair and will advise you if we believe a replacement would be a better long-term investment for your business.
The single most effective way to prevent future walk-in cooler breakdowns is to invest in a regular, professional preventative maintenance plan. Most catastrophic failures do not happen out of the blue; they are the result of small, unaddressed issues that snowball over time. A dirty condenser coil leads to an overworked compressor, which eventually leads to a burnout. A regular maintenance visit from Vortex Air HVAC, where we clean the coils and inspect all the components, can stop this chain reaction before it starts.
As a business owner, you and your staff can also play a role. Train your staff to always make sure the walk-in door is closed and sealed tightly. Do not allow products to be stacked in a way that blocks airflow from the evaporator fans. Keep the area around the exterior condensing unit clear of any trash or debris. And most importantly, pay attention to your system. If you notice the temperature starting to creep up or hear a new, strange noise, call for service immediately. Catching a problem early is the key to a less expensive and less disruptive repair.
Regular maintenance allows our technicians to spot wearing parts, find small refrigerant leaks, and correct minor issues before they leave you with a cooler full of spoiled product. The small, predictable cost of a maintenance contract is an insurance policy against the much larger, unpredictable costs of an emergency breakdown. If you want to maximize the reliability and lifespan of your critical refrigeration equipment, a proactive approach is always the best strategy.
We understand that when your walk-in cooler is down, every minute is critical. Our entire emergency repair process is designed for speed. We offer priority dispatch for commercial refrigeration emergencies and will get a technician to your Orem location as quickly as possible. The diagnosis time can vary, but our experienced technicians are trained to be systematic and efficient, often finding the root cause of the problem within the first hour.
The actual repair time depends on the specific failure. A simple repair, like replacing a fan motor or a contactor that we have on our truck, can often be completed in an hour or two after the diagnosis. This means we can often have your cooler back up and running in just a few hours from the time we arrive. Our goal is always to complete the repair in a single visit whenever possible.
The biggest potential for delay is if a major, non-stock part has failed, such as a specific compressor or a proprietary control board. While we stock many common parts, it is impossible to carry everything for every model. If a special part is needed, we will leverage our extensive network of local refrigeration parts suppliers to get the part as quickly as possible, often on the same day. We will communicate with you clearly about the timeline and will do everything in our power to expedite the repair and save your inventory.
