I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.

We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁

I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Mini Split Maintenance Service

As a homeowner, you should be cleaning the removable mesh filters on your indoor units every month. However, these filters do not capture everything. Our professional cleaning goes much deeper. We will carefully disassemble the casing of the indoor unit to gain full access to the internal components. We use a mini-pressure washer with a special bib to contain the water and cleaning solution, allowing us to flush all the accumulated grime out of the unit safely and without making a mess. A professional deep clean is essential for maintaining healthy indoor air quality from a ductless system.

While cleaning the indoor unit, we also service the condensate drain line. This line carries moisture from the indoor unit to the outdoors. It can become clogged with slime and debris, which can cause water to back up and leak from the indoor unit, potentially damaging your walls and floor. We will flush the drain line to ensure it is clear and flowing freely. This simple step is a crucial part of preventing water damage and ensuring the system’s dehumidification function works correctly.

The maintenance service also includes a full tune-up of the outdoor condenser unit. Just like a standard heat pump, the outdoor unit’s coil can become clogged with dirt, leaves, and cottonwood. We will thoroughly clean the outdoor coil to ensure proper heat transfer, which is vital for the system’s efficiency in both heating and cooling modes. We will also inspect the fan motor, the wiring, and the overall condition of the outdoor unit. A clean outdoor unit is key to low energy consumption.

Our certified technicians will also perform a check of the refrigeration system. We will check the refrigerant pressures to ensure the system has the correct charge. An incorrect charge, whether too low or too high, can damage the high-efficiency inverter compressor and will reduce the system’s performance. We will also inspect the flare connections and the line set for any signs of refrigerant leaks. This mechanical checkup ensures the heart of your mini split system is in good health.

Investing in an annual professional maintenance and cleaning service for your mini split is essential. It keeps the air you breathe clean and healthy, ensures the system is running at its peak, whisper-quiet efficiency, and helps you avoid costly repairs by catching small problems early. Protect your investment in ductless technology with expert care from Vortex Air HVAC. Our Orem team is here to help you get the most out of your mini split system.

Common Mini Split Maintenance Questions

We understand you have questions about the proper care for your ductless mini split system. Our goal is to provide clear answers to help you maintain your system. Below are answers to frequent inquiries.

To keep your ductless mini split system in optimal condition, you should have it professionally serviced and deep cleaned once a year. Because a mini split is a heat pump that provides both heating and cooling, it runs all year long, accumulating more wear and dirt than a standard AC unit. An annual tune-up and cleaning is essential for maintaining its efficiency, ensuring healthy air quality, and preventing breakdowns. The best time to schedule this service is in the spring or fall, to prepare the system for the upcoming high-use season.

The most important maintenance task you, as the homeowner, should perform is cleaning the reusable mesh filters on the indoor units. This should be done much more frequently, typically once every month, especially during periods of heavy use. These filters are your first line of defense, and keeping them clean is vital for good airflow. However, this simple filter cleaning is not a substitute for a professional annual service, which involves a much deeper cleaning of the internal components.

A regular annual service from a professional is also key to a long lifespan for your equipment. Our technicians can spot developing issues, like a weakening capacitor or a small refrigerant leak, before they turn into major, expensive problems. Considering the investment you have made in your high-efficiency ductless system, an annual maintenance plan is a very small price to pay for the reliability, efficiency, and clean air it provides.

If you notice a musty, moldy, or “dirty sock” smell coming from your indoor mini split unit when it is running, it is a sure sign that it is in desperate need of a professional deep cleaning. This unpleasant odor is caused by the buildup of dust, bacteria, and mold on the system’s internal evaporator coil and, most commonly, on the barrel-shaped blower wheel. The dark, damp environment inside the indoor unit is a perfect breeding ground for this biological growth. When you turn the unit on, the fan blows air over these contaminated surfaces, picking up the musty smell and distributing it throughout your room.

The standard mesh filters on the indoor unit can only capture larger dust particles. Microscopic mold spores and bacteria can pass through the filter and find a home on the wet evaporator coil and the constantly moving blower wheel. Over time, they can form a biofilm, or slime, which is the source of the odor. Simply cleaning the mesh filter will not get rid of this smell. The internal components themselves must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Our professional deep cleaning service is designed specifically to solve this problem. We use specialized tools and a “bib kit” to safely pressure wash the internal coil and blower wheel with a food-safe, sanitizing cleaner. This process flushes out all the accumulated biological growth, completely eliminating the source of the odor. A professional cleaning will not only make your air smell fresh again but will also make it much healthier to breathe.

While you can and should be cleaning the removable plastic mesh filters yourself on a monthly basis, we strongly advise against attempting to perform a deep cleaning of the internal components yourself. A deep clean requires a partial disassembly of the indoor unit’s casing to gain access to the evaporator coil and the blower wheel. This can be a tricky process, and it is easy to break the plastic clips or damage the delicate electronic components if you are not familiar with the specific model.

The cleaning process itself requires specialized equipment to be done correctly and without making a mess. We use a low-pressure water sprayer and a custom-fitted plastic bib that funnels all the dirty water and cleaning solution into a bucket. Attempting to clean the coil and blower wheel with spray cans and rags is generally ineffective and can push the dirt deeper into the components. It can also lead to water getting into the unit’s electronics, causing a short circuit.

For a truly effective and safe deep cleaning that removes all the hidden mold and grime, it is a job best left to a trained professional. Our technicians at Vortex Air HVAC have the right tools, the right cleaning solutions, and the experience to do the job thoroughly without any risk of damaging your unit or your home. Let us handle the deep cleaning while you handle the simple monthly filter maintenance.

A professional mini split deep cleaning is a much more thorough process than just wiping down the unit. Our technician will first place a protective bib and funnel system around the indoor unit to ensure all water is contained. We will then remove the unit’s outer casing and louvers to get direct access to the internal parts. We will spray the evaporator coil and the hard-to-reach blower wheel with a specialized, non-corrosive, foaming coil cleaner. This cleaner is designed to break down dirt, grease, and biological growth.

After letting the cleaner dwell for a few minutes, we will use a low-pressure water sprayer to thoroughly rinse the coil and the blower wheel. This pressurized water will flush all the dislodged dirt, mold, and cleaning solution out of the unit and safely into our collection bucket via the bib. This process is highly effective at removing the contaminants that are often hidden deep within the fins of the coil and the blades of the blower wheel. We will continue to flush the unit until the water running out of it is completely clear.

After the cleaning, we will also flush the condensate drain line to ensure it is clear of any blockages. We will then reassemble the unit’s casing, clean the removable filters, and wipe down the exterior. The result is an indoor unit that is not just clean on the outside, but sanitized and refreshed on the inside. This process restores airflow, improves efficiency, and eliminates the sources of musty odors and poor air quality.

Yes, regular maintenance, especially the deep cleaning of the indoor unit, can have a significant impact on your mini split’s energy efficiency. The efficiency of any air conditioning or heating system depends on good airflow across its coils. When the blower wheel and the evaporator coil inside the indoor unit become caked with a layer of dust and grime, it severely restricts this airflow. The fan has to work harder to try and push air through the clogged components, which consumes more electricity.

More importantly, the layer of dirt on the evaporator coil acts as an insulator. This makes it much harder for the coil to absorb heat from the room (in cooling mode) or release heat into the room (in heating mode). To achieve the temperature you have set on the thermostat, the compressor in the outdoor unit will have to run much longer and at a higher speed. This dramatically increases your energy consumption. A professional cleaning removes this insulating layer of dirt, restoring the coil’s ability to transfer heat efficiently.

The cleaning of the outdoor unit’s coil is also crucial for efficiency. Just like the indoor coil, a dirty outdoor coil will hamper heat transfer and force the compressor to work harder. By ensuring that both the indoor and outdoor components are clean and that airflow is unrestricted, our professional maintenance service restores your high-efficiency mini split system to its peak performance, helping you achieve the low energy bills you invested in it for.

If you see water dripping or leaking from your indoor mini split unit, the cause is almost always a clog in the condensate drain line. As the mini split runs in cooling mode, it acts as a dehumidifier, pulling moisture from your indoor air. This moisture collects on the cold evaporator coil and drips down into a collection pan at the bottom of the unit. A small plastic tube, called the condensate drain line, is designed to carry this water from the pan to the outdoors via gravity.

Over time, this drain line can become clogged with a buildup of slime, algae, and dust. When the line is clogged, the water can no longer drain out. The collection pan will then fill up and overflow, causing water to drip out of the front or bottom of the indoor unit. This can cause damage to your walls, flooring, and furniture, and it needs to be addressed promptly.

During our maintenance visit, we will professionally flush the condensate drain line with a special tool to clear out any existing or developing clogs. This is a key preventative step. If you are experiencing a leak, our repair technicians can quickly clear the blockage and get your unit draining properly again. In rare cases, a leak can also be caused by a cracked drain pan or an improperly installed unit, both of which we can also diagnose and repair.

Yes, a complete mini split maintenance service must include a thorough tune-up of the outdoor unit. The outdoor condenser is the heart of the system, containing the expensive and hardworking compressor. We perform a multi-point inspection and cleaning of this unit. The most important step is cleaning the outdoor coil. We will use a professional coil cleaner and a gentle water rinse to remove all the accumulated dirt, dust, leaves, and cottonwood from the coil’s fins. This restores proper airflow and is essential for the system’s efficiency.

We also inspect the outdoor unit’s other components. We will check the electrical connections, test the start and run capacitors, and measure the amperage draw of the compressor and the fan motor. This can help us identify any electrical components that are weakening and are at risk of failure. We will also check the condition of the fan blade and ensure the unit is still level on its mounting pad.

Finally, we will check the system’s refrigerant charge. An incorrect charge can severely impact performance and can damage the sensitive inverter-driven compressor. Our certified technicians have the specialized gauges and knowledge to check the refrigerant pressures accurately. A complete service of both the indoor and outdoor units is what ensures your entire mini split system is reliable and efficient.

A professional maintenance service for a single-zone mini split system, which includes a deep cleaning of the indoor unit and a full tune-up of the outdoor unit, typically takes about one and a half to two hours. We are very thorough in our process, as a proper cleaning and inspection cannot be rushed. We take the time to set up our cleaning bib correctly, let the cleaning solutions work, and perform a detailed mechanical inspection.

If you have a multi-zone system with several indoor units, the service will take longer. You can generally add about one hour for each additional indoor unit that needs to be deep cleaned. For example, a three-zone system would likely take around three and a half to four hours to service completely. We will be able to give you a more precise time estimate when you schedule your service based on the number of indoor units you have.

We strive to work as efficiently as possible to minimize the disruption to your day. Our technicians are highly experienced with these systems and have a streamlined process for performing the maintenance. We come fully prepared with all the necessary tools and cleaning supplies to get the job done right. Investing a few hours once a year for professional maintenance is a small commitment that provides a huge return in terms of performance, air quality, and system longevity.
