I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.

We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁

I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Common Mini Split Repair Questions

We understand that a problem with your ductless mini split can be concerning. Our goal is to provide clear answers to common repair questions. Below are answers to frequent inquiries about mini split issues.

A water leak from the indoor unit, or “head,” is the single most common problem that mini split owners experience. In almost every case, the cause of this leak is a clog in the condensate drain line. As the mini split operates in cooling mode, it removes humidity from the air, which collects as water in a small drain pan inside the unit. A plastic tube is supposed to carry this water outside. Over time, this tube can become clogged with dust, slime, and algae. When the drain is clogged, the pan overflows, and water starts dripping from the unit onto your floor and walls.

This is a problem that needs to be addressed promptly to prevent water damage. Our technicians can quickly and effectively clear the clog in your drain line. We use specialized tools, such as a high-pressure nitrogen flush or a special vacuum pump, to blow or suck the blockage out of the line. This is a very common and straightforward repair for a trained technician.

In some rare cases, a leak could be caused by a cracked drain pan or a problem with the unit’s installation angle. Another possibility is that the indoor coil has frozen into a block of ice due to a separate issue (like low refrigerant), and the leak is occurring as it melts. Our technician will perform a full diagnosis to confirm the cause, but the vast majority of the time, the culprit is a simple clog in the drain line that we can clear easily.

If your mini split is running but is not providing enough cooling in the summer or enough heating in the winter, there are several potential causes. The very first thing you should check is the filter on the indoor unit. A severely clogged filter will choke the airflow and dramatically reduce the system’s performance. If the filter is clean, the problem is more technical. A very common cause is an incorrect refrigerant charge due to a leak. Mini splits are very sensitive to their refrigerant level, and even a small leak can significantly impact performance. Our technicians can find and repair leaks and recharge the system correctly.

The problem could also be with one of the fan motors. If the fan in the indoor unit or the outdoor unit has failed, the system will not be able to transfer heat effectively. Another possibility is a dirty coil. If the indoor unit’s blower wheel and coil are impacted with dirt, or if the outdoor unit’s coil is clogged with debris, airflow will be restricted, leading to poor performance. This is why regular professional cleaning is so important.

The issue could also be more complex, such as a failing inverter compressor or a problem with the electronic control board. These advanced components require a technician with specific training to diagnose. Our team will systematically test all these possibilities to find the exact reason for the poor performance and provide an effective repair.

If your mini split’s remote control is not working, there are a few simple things you can check yourself before calling for service. The first and most obvious step is to replace the batteries in the remote with a fresh set. Dead batteries are the most common cause of a non-responsive remote. After replacing the batteries, try pointing the remote directly at the indoor unit from a close distance and press the power button. Make sure there are no obstructions, like furniture or curtains, between the remote and the unit’s infrared receiver.

If fresh batteries do not solve the problem, you can try resetting the remote. Look for a small, recessed reset button that you can press with a paperclip, or try removing the batteries for a few minutes and then reinserting them. You can also try to power cycle the mini split unit itself by turning it off at the circuit breaker for a few minutes and then turning it back on. This can sometimes reset the communication between the unit and the remote.

If none of these steps work, it is possible that either the remote control itself has failed or the infrared receiver on the indoor unit’s control board has failed. Our technicians can test the signal from the remote and diagnose the problem. We can often order a replacement remote for you if needed. In some cases, a universal mini split remote can also be programmed to work with your system.

Modern mini split systems have sophisticated self-diagnostic capabilities. When the system’s control board detects a problem, it will often shut the unit down for safety and display an error code. This code is usually shown on the remote control’s display or through a specific pattern of blinking lights on the indoor unit itself. These error codes are an incredibly useful tool for our technicians, as they can point us directly to the source of the problem.

Each manufacturer has its own set of error codes, and the meaning of a specific code can vary from brand to brand. An error code could indicate a wide range of issues, such as a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units, a problem with a temperature sensor, a fan motor failure, or a fault in the compressor circuit. If your unit is displaying an error code, it is helpful to write it down before you call us for service.

You can sometimes find a list of error codes in your user manual, but they often provide only a general description of the problem. You should not attempt to perform complex repairs based on an error code yourself. The code is a starting point for a professional diagnosis. Our technicians have access to the detailed service manuals and technical support for all major brands, allowing us to accurately interpret the error code and perform the necessary tests to confirm the failure before making a repair.

One of the main benefits of a mini split is its quiet operation. If your outdoor unit is suddenly making a loud or unusual noise, it is a sign that something is wrong. A loud rattling or vibrating noise could be caused by debris, like a leaf or a twig, that has gotten into the fan grille and is being hit by the fan blade. It could also mean that the fan blade itself has come loose or that the unit’s panels are vibrating. These are often simple fixes.

A more serious noise is a high-pitched squealing or grinding sound. This almost always indicates that a motor bearing is failing. This could be the bearing in the large condenser fan motor or, more seriously, inside the compressor. If you hear this type of noise, you should shut the system down immediately to prevent further damage and call for service. Continuing to run the unit could cause the motor to seize up completely.

A loud buzzing or humming sound can be a sign of an electrical problem. It might be a failing capacitor or contactor, or it could be the sound of the compressor straining to start. Our technicians are skilled at diagnosing these noises. We can pinpoint the source and determine if it is a simple issue or a sign of a more critical component failure, and we will perform the right repair to restore your system to its normal, quiet operation.

No, you do not. In a multi-zone mini split system, each indoor unit operates largely independently, even though they are all connected to the same outdoor unit. If one of your indoor units fails, it does not mean that the others need to be replaced. The problem is almost always confined to that single indoor unit itself. For example, one indoor head could have a failed fan motor or a bad control board, while the other units in your home continue to work perfectly fine.

Our repair process would focus solely on diagnosing and repairing the specific indoor unit that is malfunctioning. We can replace the fan motor, the control board, or any other component within that single unit to restore its operation. The rest of your system would be unaffected. This is one of the advantages of a zoned system; a failure in one zone does not typically cause a total system shutdown.

The only time a failure in one part of the system would affect the others is if the outdoor unit itself has failed. If the compressor or the main control board in the outdoor unit fails, then none of the indoor units will be able to provide heating or cooling. In this case, the repair would be focused on the single outdoor unit. You would still not need to replace the indoor units.

The cost to repair a mini split can vary widely, just like with any HVAC system. The final cost depends entirely on the specific part that has failed and the labor required to replace it. A simple and common repair, such as clearing a clogged condensate drain line or replacing a bad capacitor in the outdoor unit, is generally very affordable. These are quick repairs that do not involve expensive parts. We will always provide an upfront quote before we begin any work.

More complex repairs will naturally have a higher cost. For example, replacing the fan motor in an indoor unit is a more labor-intensive job that requires a significant disassembly of the unit. Replacing a main electronic control board can also be more expensive, as these proprietary boards can be costly parts. A major refrigeration repair, such as finding and fixing a refrigerant leak, will also be a more significant expense due to the labor and the cost of the refrigerant.

The most expensive possible repair is a failure of the inverter-driven compressor in the outdoor unit. This is the heart of the system and is a very expensive component. If your system is older and out of warranty, a compressor replacement may lead to a discussion about repairing versus replacing the entire system. Our technicians will always provide you with a clear and honest assessment to help you make the most cost-effective decision.

Yes, a refrigerant leak in a mini split system can and should be repaired. A mini split is a “critically charged” system, meaning it is designed to operate with a very precise amount of refrigerant. Even a small leak can cause a significant drop in performance and efficiency and can cause damage to the compressor over time. Simply “topping off” the system with more refrigerant without fixing the leak is not a proper or legal solution. The source of the leak must be found and repaired first.

Finding a refrigerant leak in a mini split system can be a challenge, as the leak could be in the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, or anywhere along the copper refrigerant lines that connect them. Our technicians use specialized tools, such as electronic leak detectors (“sniffers”) and an ultraviolet dye that can be added to the system, to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. The most common location for leaks is at the “flare” connections where the refrigerant lines connect to the units.

Once the leak is located, we will perform a professional repair. This may involve re-flaring a connection, or it may require brazing a small hole in a copper line. After the repair is made, we will perform a pressure test to ensure the system is completely sealed. We will then pull a deep vacuum to remove all contaminants before recharging the system with the exact, factory-specified weight of refrigerant. This is a detailed process that restores the integrity and performance of your system.
