I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.

We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁

I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Gas Line Repair Service

We use several professional methods for leak detection. The process often starts by isolating different sections of your gas piping and performing a pressure test on each one. This helps us narrow down the leak to a specific area of your home. Once we have isolated the section, we use advanced tools like an electronic combustible gas detector, also known as a “gas sniffer.” This highly sensitive device can detect even trace amounts of natural gas in the air, allowing us to hone in on the precise location of the leak at a specific pipe, joint, or fitting. We also use a special leak detection solution that bubbles when applied to a leaking connection.

Once the leak has been located, our technician will explain the problem to you and outline the necessary repair. We will provide you with a clear, upfront price for the work before we begin. The repair itself may involve tightening a loose fitting, or it may require cutting out a damaged section of pipe and replacing it. Our technicians are experts in working with both black iron pipe and flexible CSST. We will perform the repair using the highest quality materials and workmanship, ensuring the new connection is secure, durable, and meets all safety codes.

After the physical repair is complete, we must perform another rigorous test to verify that the leak is gone and that the entire system is safe. We will pressurize the entire gas piping system with air and perform a pressure test, just as we would for a new installation. The system must hold a specific pressure for a required amount of time with absolutely no drop. This test confirms that not only is our repair solid, but that there are no other pre-existing leaks anywhere else in your system. This comprehensive test is non-negotiable for ensuring your safety.

Only after the system has passed the pressure test will we coordinate with the gas utility company to have your service restored. Our technician will then go through your home and relight the pilot lights on all your gas appliances, such as your furnace and water heater. We will perform a final check of the system’s operation to ensure everything is working correctly. We do not consider our job complete until your home is safe, your gas service is fully restored, and all your appliances are back online.

A gas leak is a frightening experience, but you can count on the professionals at Vortex Air HVAC to handle the situation with expertise, efficiency, and a total commitment to safety. We have the tools and the training to take a dangerous situation and make it safe again. If you suspect you have a gas leak, or if your gas has been shut off, do not hesitate to call us. Common Gas Line Repair Questions

We understand that dealing with a gas line issue is stressful. Our goal is to provide clear answers to your questions, focusing on safety and the repair process. Below are answers to common inquiries.

If you smell gas in or around your home, you must act immediately. Natural gas is naturally odorless, so utility companies add a chemical called mercaptan to give it a distinct smell, often compared to rotten eggs or sulfur. This odor is your primary warning sign of a potential leak. If you detect this smell, your first priority is to prevent any potential source of ignition. Do not turn any lights or electrical appliances on or off. Do not use a landline phone or a cell phone inside the house. Do not light a match or a lighter. Any of these actions could create a spark and cause an explosion.

Your next step is to evacuate the building immediately. Get everyone, including pets, out of the house as quickly as you can. Do not take time to open windows or try to find the source of the leak yourself. The most important thing is to get to a safe location, a good distance away from the building. This could be across the street or at a neighbor’s house. Do not start your car if it is parked in an attached garage or very close to the house.

Once you are safely away from the building, call 911 and your local gas utility’s emergency hotline. Their phone number is usually listed on your gas bill. Report that you smell gas at your address. The fire department and the gas company will respond quickly to handle the immediate emergency. They will shut off the gas supply to your home and will let you know when it is safe to re-enter. Do not go back inside for any reason until they have given you the all-clear.

Finding a gas leak requires specialized equipment and a systematic, professional approach. Our technicians at Vortex Air HVAC use a combination of methods to accurately and safely pinpoint the source of a leak. The process usually begins with a pressure test. After the gas has been shut off at the meter, we will isolate your home’s entire gas piping system and use an air compressor to pressurize it to a specific level. We then attach a highly sensitive pressure gauge, called a manometer, and monitor it for a set period. If the pressure drops, it confirms there is a leak somewhere in the system.

Once we have confirmed a leak exists, we need to find its exact location. We can isolate different sections of the piping system to narrow down the search area. To find the precise spot, we use an electronic combustible gas detector, or “gas sniffer.” This handheld device is extremely sensitive and will sound an alarm when it detects even very small concentrations of natural gas. By moving the sniffer along the pipes and fittings, we can hone in on the exact joint or section of pipe that is leaking.

For visible joints and connections, we also use a traditional but very effective method: a soapy water solution. We apply a special bubbling liquid to the pipe fittings. If there is a leak, the escaping gas will create visible bubbles in the solution, immediately revealing the source of the problem. By using a combination of these professional techniques, we can find any leak, no matter how small, without any guesswork. This accuracy is essential for performing an effective and safe repair.

Yes, any gas leak, no matter how small it may seem, must be considered dangerous and should be addressed immediately. Natural gas is highly flammable, and when it leaks, it can mix with the air and create a combustible mixture. It only takes a small spark, such as the one created by flipping a light switch or the thermostat kicking on, to ignite this mixture and cause a fire or a devastating explosion. The size of the leak only affects how quickly the gas can accumulate to a dangerous level. Therefore, there is no such thing as a “safe” gas leak.

Beyond the risk of fire, a gas leak can also pose a health risk. While natural gas itself is not toxic, a significant leak in an enclosed space can displace the oxygen in the air. Breathing air with a low oxygen level can lead to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and nausea, and in extreme cases, can cause asphyxiation. Furthermore, exposure to the mercaptan odorant added to gas can cause eye and respiratory irritation for some individuals.

Because of these serious risks, you should never ignore the smell of gas or any other sign of a potential leak. It is always better to be safe and treat the situation as an emergency. Evacuate the building and call for professional help immediately. The professionals at the gas company and at Vortex Air HVAC are trained to handle these situations safely. We will ensure the problem is fully resolved and your home is safe before restoring your gas service. Never underestimate the danger of a gas leak.

The responsibility for repairing a gas line is divided between the gas utility company and the homeowner. The utility company is responsible for the main gas line that runs under the street and the service line that runs from the main to your gas meter. They are also responsible for the gas meter itself. The point of demarcation is typically the fitting on the homeowner’s side of the gas meter. Any gas piping that runs from the meter into your home and throughout your house is considered the homeowner’s property and responsibility.

So, if there is a leak in the main line under the street or in the service line leading up to your meter, the gas company will perform the repair at their expense. However, if the leak is located anywhere in the piping system inside your home or running from the meter to your appliances, you, the homeowner, are responsible for hiring a licensed contractor to perform the repair. The utility company’s only role in this case is to shut off the gas for safety and to turn it back on after the repair has been made and the system has been proven to be safe.

When the utility company shuts off your gas due to a leak on your property, they will often “red-tag” the system. This means you cannot have your gas service restored until you have provided proof from a licensed contractor that the leak has been repaired and the system has passed a pressure test. Vortex Air HVAC can provide this complete service. We will find the leak, make the necessary repairs, perform the pressure test, and provide the necessary documentation to the utility company to get your service restored as quickly as possible.

Gas lines are designed to be extremely durable, but leaks can still occur for several reasons, often related to age or improper installation. One of the most common causes of leaks is the failure of the sealant at the threaded joints and fittings of black iron pipe. Over many decades, the pipe dope or tape used to seal these joints can dry out and degrade, allowing a small amount of gas to seep out. This is particularly common in older homes with original gas piping. Leaks can also occur if a fitting was not tightened properly during the initial installation.

Corrosion can also be a cause of leaks, although it is less common with modern materials. Older steel pipes, especially if they are in a damp environment like a crawl space, can corrode over time, leading to pinhole leaks in the pipe itself. Improperly installed CSST (flexible gas line) can also be susceptible to leaks if it is punctured or if the fittings were not installed according to the manufacturer’s strict specifications. This is why it is so important that only trained professionals work with these materials.

Leaks can also be caused by physical damage to the line. This can happen accidentally during a home renovation project if a pipe is hit or drilled into. It can also be caused by ground shifting or settlement of the house, which can put stress on the rigid pipes and joints, eventually causing a failure. No matter the cause, our technicians have the expertise to identify why the leak occurred and perform a durable, long-lasting repair that addresses the root of the problem.

A pressure test is a non-negotiable safety procedure that is performed after any gas line repair or installation to verify the integrity of the entire piping system. It is the only way to be 100% certain that the system has no leaks before reintroducing natural gas. The process involves completely sealing off the gas piping system from the meter and any appliances. Then, we use an air compressor to fill the pipes with air to a specific pressure, which is mandated by local code, typically much higher than the normal operating pressure of the gas.

Once the system is pressurized, we attach a sensitive pressure gauge, called a manometer, to the pipes. We then let the system sit under pressure for a required amount of time, also specified by local code (for example, 15 minutes). During this time, we watch the gauge very closely. If the pressure reading on the gauge remains perfectly stable and does not drop at all, it proves that the system is airtight and free from any leaks. This is a successful test.

If the pressure on the gauge drops, even slightly, it indicates that air is escaping from somewhere in the system, meaning there is still a leak. In this case, we would need to re-investigate to find the additional leak, repair it, and then perform the pressure test again. We will repeat this process until the system can hold pressure perfectly. We will never turn the gas back on until the system has passed this critical test. It is our ultimate quality control check and your ultimate assurance of safety.

The duration of a gas line repair can vary significantly depending on the location and complexity of the leak. The first part of the process, leak detection, can sometimes take as long or longer than the repair itself, especially if the leak is in a hard-to-reach area like inside a wall or in a crawl space. Finding the leak can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Our technicians work as efficiently as possible, but our priority is accuracy in locating the source of the problem.

Once the leak is found, the repair itself is often relatively quick if it is at an exposed joint or fitting. Repairing a leaky fitting might only take an hour or so. However, if the leak is in a section of pipe that is inside a wall, the job becomes more complex. It will require cutting into the drywall to access the pipe, which adds significant time to the project. After the pipe is repaired, you would then need a separate contractor to patch the drywall.

After the physical repair, we must perform the code-required pressure test, which adds another 15 to 30 minutes to the job. Then, we must coordinate with the utility company to have the gas turned back on and then relight all your appliances. All in all, a simple, accessible repair might be completed in two to three hours from start to finish. A more complex repair could take half a day or longer. Our technician will be able to give you a more accurate time estimate once they have diagnosed the problem.

Yes, we are fully equipped and qualified to repair gas lines that are buried underground. Underground gas lines are commonly used to supply outdoor appliances like BBQ grills, pool heaters, and fire pits. These lines are typically made of a special polyethylene plastic pipe or a coated steel pipe designed for direct burial. Leaks in these lines can be caused by corrosion, damage from digging, or failure at the fittings where they connect to the appliance or rise out of the ground. Finding and repairing these leaks requires a specific set of skills and equipment.

Locating an underground leak can be challenging. We often use a combination of system isolation and highly sensitive gas detectors that can pick up traces of gas migrating up through the soil. Once the general area of the leak is found, we will need to excavate the ground to expose the pipe and pinpoint the exact failure point. Our technicians take great care to dig carefully and minimize the disruption to your landscaping as much as possible.

Once the damaged section of pipe is exposed, we will cut it out and perform a professional repair, using the correct type of approved fittings for underground use. The repair is then meticulously tested to ensure it is secure and leak-free before we backfill the trench. Repairing an underground gas line is a complex job that should only be undertaken by a qualified professional like Vortex Air HVAC. We have the expertise to perform these specialized repairs safely and correctly.
