They were outstanding. Super responsive without talking to some robot to schedule. They shot right over to the house right away when our AC wasn't working. You want to use them for super quick and great service!
Great company to work with! I felt like they were fair and honest. They were great at communicating with me and getting out to our place fast and working around our schedule! Will be using them again in the future!
I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.
We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁
Quick response time, very knowledgeable, and great pricing. I definitely will be calling vortex next time!
I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Common Air Conditioning Repair Questions
We understand you have questions about air conditioning repair. Our goal is to provide clear and helpful answers to help you navigate a stressful situation. Below, you will find detailed information on common inquiries about AC repair services.
There are several common reasons why your air conditioner might be running but not blowing cold air. One of the most frequent culprits is a low refrigerant level. Refrigerant is the substance that absorbs heat from your indoor air; if the level is low, usually due to a leak, the system cannot cool effectively. Our technicians can locate and repair refrigerant leaks and then recharge the system to the proper level. This is a complex task that requires EPA certification and specialized equipment. Simply adding more refrigerant without fixing the leak is not a solution and can cause further damage to your system. We provide a complete and permanent fix.
Another common cause is a dirty or clogged condenser coil. The outdoor unit’s coil is responsible for releasing the heat that was removed from your home. If this coil is covered in dirt, leaves, or grass clippings, it cannot dissipate heat efficiently. This forces the system to work harder and can result in it blowing warm air. As part of our diagnostic process, we thoroughly inspect and, if necessary, clean the condenser coil. Similarly, a clogged air filter or a dirty evaporator coil on the indoor unit can restrict airflow and lead to the same problem. We check the entire system to find the exact cause.
The issue could also be electrical or mechanical. A failing compressor, which is the heart of your AC system, will prevent the unit from cooling. The outdoor fan motor might also be broken; without the fan running, the condenser cannot release heat, leading to poor cooling performance. Our technicians will meticulously check all components, including capacitors, contactors, and motors, to pinpoint the failure. Whatever the reason for the lack of cool air, our team has the diagnostic skills and tools to find it and fix it fast. We will restore your home’s comfort quickly and effectively.
Strange noises coming from your air conditioner are almost always a sign that a component is failing or has come loose. It is important to turn off the system and call a professional immediately to prevent further damage. A squealing or screeching noise often indicates a problem with the belt on an older system or, more commonly, a failing motor bearing in either the indoor blower or the outdoor condenser fan. This high pitched sound is a clear warning sign that a motor is about to seize up. Our technicians can diagnose the source of the noise and replace the faulty motor before it fails completely.
A rattling or clanking noise could be caused by several issues. It might be something simple, like loose screws or bolts on the unit’s casing. It could also indicate that debris has gotten into the outdoor unit and is hitting the fan blades. More seriously, it could signal a problem with the compressor or a loose fan blade. A buzzing or humming sound often points to an electrical issue, such as a failing capacitor, a faulty contactor, or a problem with the compressor’s electrical connections. These electrical issues can be dangerous and should only be addressed by a qualified technician.
A clicking sound when the unit starts up or shuts down can be normal, but constant clicking is a sign of a failing thermostat or a defective electrical control. A gurgling or bubbling noise might indicate a refrigerant leak or a problem with the condensate drain line. Because so many different problems can cause strange noises, it is crucial to have a professional from Vortex Air HVAC perform a thorough diagnosis. We can accurately identify the source of the sound and perform the correct repair to ensure your system operates safely and quietly again. Ignoring these sounds can lead to a much more expensive repair down the road.
The cost of an air conditioning repair in Orem can vary significantly depending on the nature of the problem. A minor repair, such as replacing a capacitor or cleaning a clogged drain line, will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. These are common repairs with relatively inexpensive parts and can often be completed quickly. Our service call fee includes the initial diagnosis, after which our technician will provide you with a clear, upfront price for the specific repair needed. We ensure you approve the cost before any work is performed. There are no hidden charges with Vortex Air HVAC.
More significant repairs, such as replacing a fan motor or fixing a refrigerant leak, will have a higher cost. The parts for these repairs are more expensive, and the labor involved is more intensive. A refrigerant leak repair, for example, involves finding the source of the leak, fixing it, and then recharging the system with refrigerant, which can be a time consuming process. The price of refrigerant itself can also be a significant factor in the total cost. We always strive to provide the most cost effective solution for our customers. We provide honest assessments and fair pricing for all major repairs.
The most expensive repair is typically a compressor replacement. The compressor is a major component, and replacing it is a complex, labor intensive job. In many cases, especially with older systems, the cost of a compressor replacement can be close to half the cost of a new unit. In this situation, our technician will provide you with a comparison between the cost of the repair and the cost of a new, more efficient system. We will give you our honest, professional recommendation to help you make the best financial decision for your situation. Our priority is your long term satisfaction, not just a quick fix.
An AC capacitor is a small, cylindrical component that is crucial for your air conditioner’s operation. Its job is to store and release a burst of energy to help start the system’s motors, including the compressor, the outdoor fan motor, and the indoor blower motor. Think of it as a temporary battery that provides the extra jolt needed to get these powerful motors spinning. Some systems also use a run capacitor, which provides a continuous supply of energy to keep the motors running efficiently once they have started. Without a functioning capacitor, your AC’s motors will struggle to start or may not start at all.
Capacitors can fail for several reasons. One of the most common causes is simple age and wear. Over years of use, a capacitor’s ability to hold a charge diminishes, and it will eventually fail. Heat is another major enemy of capacitors. On a hot summer day, the temperature inside your outdoor unit can become extremely high, which puts stress on the capacitor and can cause it to degrade more quickly. Power surges and fluctuations in your home’s electrical supply can also damage a capacitor, causing it to fail suddenly. This is why a failing capacitor is one of the most common AC repairs we perform.
When a capacitor fails, you might hear a humming or clicking sound as the motor attempts to start but cannot. You might also notice that the fan is not spinning or that the unit is blowing warm air. Our technicians can quickly test a capacitor using a multimeter to see if it is holding the correct charge. If it has failed, replacing it is a relatively quick and affordable repair. However, it is a job that should only be performed by a professional, as capacitors can hold a dangerous electrical charge even when the power is off. Our team can safely replace the faulty capacitor and get your AC running again.
An air conditioner leaking water is a common problem that should be addressed promptly to prevent water damage to your home. The water you see is condensation, which is a normal byproduct of the cooling process. As your AC’s indoor evaporator coil cools the air, it also removes moisture, which drips into a drain pan and is then carried away through a condensate drain line. A water leak almost always indicates a problem with this drainage system. The most frequent cause is a clogged condensate drain line. Algae, dirt, and debris can build up in the line over time, creating a blockage that causes water to back up and overflow the drain pan.
Our technicians can quickly clear a clogged drain line using specialized tools like a high pressure nitrogen blast or a wet/dry vacuum. We will flush the line completely to ensure all obstructions are removed. Another potential cause is a cracked or overflowing drain pan. The pan itself can become damaged or rusted over time, leading to leaks. If the AC unit is not level, water may not flow correctly into the drain, causing it to spill over the edge of the pan. We will inspect the entire drainage system to find the exact source of the leak. We ensure the problem is fully resolved.
In some less common cases, a water leak can be a sign of a more serious issue. A very dirty air filter or low refrigerant levels can cause the evaporator coil to freeze over. When this ice melts, it can produce an overwhelming amount of water that the drain system cannot handle, leading to a leak. Our comprehensive diagnostic process will determine if a frozen coil is the root cause. Whatever the reason for the leak, our technicians at Vortex Air HVAC will find and fix it, protecting your home from potential water damage and restoring your AC’s proper function. We will get your system draining correctly again.
Deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner is a major decision that depends on three main factors: the age of the unit, the cost of the repair, and the system’s overall efficiency. If your air conditioner is more than 10-15 years old, it is likely nearing the end of its operational lifespan. In this case, investing a significant amount of money into a repair may not be the wisest choice, as other components are likely to fail soon. A new system will be more reliable and come with a full manufacturer’s warranty for peace of mind. We provide honest advice based on your system’s age.
The cost of the needed repair is another critical factor. A good guideline to follow is the “5,000 rule”: multiply the age of your system in years by the estimated cost of the repair. If the result is more than $5,000, replacement is generally the more sensible financial option. For example, if your 10 year old system needs a $600 repair, the result is $6,000, suggesting replacement is a better investment. If a single repair costs 50% or more of what a new unit would cost, replacement is almost always the better path forward. We provide clear pricing to help you with this calculation.
Finally, consider your current energy bills. An older, inefficient air conditioner can cost you a significant amount of money in wasted energy. A new, high efficiency system can cut your cooling costs by 20% to 40%, and these savings can help offset the cost of the new unit over time. If your system requires a major repair and is already inefficient, replacing it allows you to start saving money on your utility bills immediately while also enjoying more reliable cooling. Our technicians can help you analyze all these factors to make an informed decision that is right for you. We are here to help you find the best solution.
Short cycling is when an air conditioner’s cooling cycle is much shorter than normal, causing the system to turn on and off frequently. A properly functioning AC should run for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time, two to three times per hour on a typical hot day. If your unit is running for only a few minutes before shutting off, and then turning back on again shortly after, it is short cycling. This is a serious issue that can cause significant damage to your system’s compressor, which is the most expensive component to replace. It also leads to increased energy consumption and poor home cooling.
One of the most common causes of short cycling is an oversized air conditioner. If the unit is too powerful for your home, it will cool the space very quickly and then shut off. This rapid cycling prevents the system from properly dehumidifying the air, leading to a cool but clammy feeling. It also puts immense strain on the compressor’s motor. Our technicians can determine if your system is correctly sized for your home. Unfortunately, the only true fix for an oversized AC is to replace it with a properly sized unit. We can help you with this process if needed.
Other issues can also cause short cycling. A clogged air filter is a frequent culprit, as it restricts airflow and can cause the system to overheat and shut down prematurely. Low refrigerant levels due to a leak can also cause the system to cycle improperly as safety sensors are tripped. A faulty thermostat that is not reading the room temperature correctly could be telling the system to shut off too soon. Our technicians at Vortex Air HVAC will perform a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the short cycling and recommend the most effective repair. Addressing this issue promptly is crucial to protecting your AC system.
The single most effective way to prevent future AC repairs is to invest in regular, professional maintenance. An annual tune up from Vortex Air HVAC allows our technicians to identify and address small issues before they become major, costly problems. During a maintenance visit, we clean critical components, tighten electrical connections, check refrigerant levels, and lubricate moving parts. This proactive care keeps your system running efficiently and reliably, significantly reducing the risk of an unexpected breakdown. Regular maintenance is the foundation of a long lasting, trouble free air conditioner. It is an investment in reliability and peace of mind.
As a homeowner, the most important task you can perform is to change your air filter regularly. A dirty filter is the root cause of many common AC problems, including restricted airflow, frozen coils, and short cycling. Check your filter every 30 days and replace it when it looks dirty, or at least once every 90 days. This simple, inexpensive task can prevent many service calls. You should also keep the area around your outdoor condenser unit clear. Ensure there are at least two feet of clearance around the unit, and trim back any bushes or plants to allow for proper airflow.
Finally, pay attention to how your system operates. If you notice any unusual sounds, a decrease in cooling performance, or a sudden spike in your energy bills, do not ignore these warning signs. Call Vortex Air HVAC for an inspection as soon as you suspect a problem. Catching issues early is key to preventing a small repair from turning into a catastrophic failure. By partnering with our professional team for maintenance and addressing potential problems quickly, you can enjoy years of reliable comfort and minimize the need for unexpected repairs. We are here to help you keep your system healthy.
