I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.

We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁

I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Home Air Purification Service

For homeowners concerned about germs like viruses and bacteria, as well as mold growth within the HVAC system, we offer ultraviolet (UV-C) air purifiers. These systems use powerful UV-C germicidal lamps that are installed inside your ductwork or air handler. As air passes through the intense UV light, the DNA of airborne microorganisms is disrupted, rendering them sterile and unable to reproduce or cause illness. A UV light system is a proven, chemical-free way to continuously sanitize the air circulating through your home. It is particularly effective at preventing mold growth on the damp surfaces of your indoor evaporator coil.

We also offer electronic air cleaners, which use the principle of electrostatic precipitation to remove particles from the air. As air passes through the unit, airborne particles are given an electrical charge. These charged particles are then collected on oppositely charged plates, removing them from the airstream. Electronic air cleaners are very effective at capturing even the smallest particles, and they have the advantage of having reusable collector cells that can be washed, rather than disposable filters that need to be replaced. This can be a convenient and cost-effective option for many homeowners.

Our professional technicians will expertly install your chosen air purification system into your existing HVAC ductwork. We take care to ensure the unit is installed correctly for optimal airflow and performance. We handle all the necessary electrical connections safely and to code. A proper installation is key to ensuring the purifier does its job effectively and does not negatively impact the performance of your heating and cooling system. We work cleanly and efficiently, with respect for your home.

After the installation, we will show you how your new system works and explain the simple maintenance it requires. For a media air cleaner, this involves replacing the filter cartridge every six to twelve months. For a UV light system, the bulb will need to be replaced every one to two years to maintain its germicidal effectiveness. We can perform this maintenance for you as part of our regular HVAC tune-up services. We are your full-service partner for both home comfort and home air quality.

Investing in a whole-house air purification system is an investment in your family’s health and well-being. By continuously cleaning the air in your entire home, these systems can reduce sickness, alleviate allergy symptoms, and create a more pleasant living environment free from dust and odors. For a comprehensive solution to your indoor air quality concerns, trust the experts at Vortex Air HVAC to provide the right technology and a professional installation. Breathe easier with our home air purification solutions.

Common Home Air Purification Questions

We understand you have questions about the different types of home air purification systems. Our goal is to provide clear answers to help you choose the best solution for your family. Below are answers to common inquiries.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it is the standard rating system used to measure the effectiveness of an air filter. The MERV scale ranges from 1 to 16 for residential applications. A higher MERV rating means the filter is more effective at capturing smaller airborne particles. For example, a basic, cheap fiberglass filter might only have a MERV rating of 1 to 4. It will only trap very large particles like carpet fibers and large dust bunnies, and does little to improve air quality. A standard one-inch pleated filter is typically in the MERV 8 to 11 range.

A MERV 8 filter does a good job of capturing larger dust particles, pollen, and mold spores. This is a significant upgrade over a basic filter. However, for families with allergy or asthma concerns, a higher MERV rating is recommended. A high-efficiency media air cleaner often uses a MERV 13 to MERV 16 filter. A MERV 13 filter is capable of capturing smaller dust particles, pet dander, smoke, and even some airborne bacteria and virus carriers. A MERV 16 filter is even more effective, approaching the performance of a HEPA filter.

It is important to understand that a higher MERV rating also means the filter is more restrictive to airflow. You cannot simply put a very high MERV filter into a system that was not designed for it, as it could damage your HVAC equipment. A professional whole-house media air cleaner is designed with a very large surface area to allow for high-efficiency filtration without negatively impacting your system’s airflow. Our experts can recommend the right MERV rating for your specific health goals and your HVAC system’s capabilities.

A media air filter and an electronic air cleaner are two different technologies that both aim to remove airborne particles, but they do so in different ways. A media air filter, also known as a mechanical air filter, works by physically trapping particles in a dense web of fibers. As air is forced through the filter media, the particles get stuck. The effectiveness of the filter depends on the density of the fibers, which is measured by its MERV rating. High-efficiency media filters use a very thick, deeply-pleated filter to provide a large surface area for trapping particles. The main maintenance for a media filter is replacing the filter cartridge periodically.

An electronic air cleaner, or EAC, works on the principle of static electricity. It has two main stages. In the first stage, particles in the airstream pass through an “ionizing” section, where they are given a positive electrical charge. In the second stage, the air passes through a series of metal collector plates that have an alternating positive and negative charge. The positively charged particles are then attracted to and stick to the negatively charged plates, removing them from the air.

The primary advantage of an electronic air cleaner is that its collector plates are washable and reusable, so you do not have to buy replacement filters. However, their performance depends heavily on the plates being kept very clean. If the plates become dirty, the EAC’s efficiency drops significantly. Some people also have concerns about the small amount of ozone that some older ionizers can produce. Both technologies can be very effective at improving indoor air quality, and our experts at Vortex Air HVAC can help you weigh the pros and cons of each to decide which is a better fit for your home.

Yes, for many people, a high-quality, whole-house air purification system can provide significant relief from allergy and asthma symptoms. The most common indoor allergens are airborne particles like dust mites, pet dander, pollen that has drifted in from outside, and mold spores. A whole-house media air cleaner with a high MERV rating (MERV 13 or higher) is specifically designed to be highly effective at capturing these microscopic irritants.

By trapping these allergens in the filter before they have a chance to be circulated throughout your home, the system can dramatically reduce the overall concentration of airborne triggers in your living space. This can lead to fewer allergy symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. For asthma sufferers, reducing the presence of these triggers in the air can also lead to fewer asthma attacks and an overall improvement in respiratory health. Many of our customers report a noticeable difference in their allergy symptoms after installing a high-efficiency air cleaner.

It is important to remember that air purification is part of a comprehensive allergy management strategy, which should also include regular cleaning, washing bedding in hot water, and using allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers. However, continuously cleaning the air you breathe for hours every day can be a very powerful tool. A whole-house system ensures that your entire home, especially your bedroom where you spend a third of your life, becomes a cleaner-air sanctuary.

The maintenance requirements for whole-house air purification systems are generally very simple and infrequent. The specific maintenance will depend on the type of system you have installed. For a high-efficiency media air cleaner, the only maintenance required is to replace the large filter cartridge. Because these filters have such a large surface area, they last much longer than a standard one-inch furnace filter. Typically, the filter only needs to be replaced once every 6 to 12 months, depending on how much your system runs. Our technicians can easily perform this task during your annual HVAC tune-up visit.

For a UV-C light air purifier, the maintenance involves replacing the ultraviolet lamp. The lamp’s germicidal effectiveness diminishes over time, even though the bulb may still appear to be lit. To ensure the system continues to effectively neutralize germs, the UV bulb should be replaced every one to two years, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation. This is also a quick and easy task for our technicians to perform during a routine service call.

For an electronic air cleaner, the maintenance involves washing the metal collector cells. This should typically be done every one to three months. The cells can be removed and washed in a utility sink or dishwasher. While this requires more frequent attention than a media filter, it has the advantage of not requiring the purchase of replacement filters. Overall, the maintenance for any of these systems is very manageable and is a small price to pay for a healthier home environment.

Some types of air purifiers can be very effective at getting rid of common household odors, while others are not. Standard particulate filters, even high-efficiency ones, are designed to trap solid particles, not gases, which are what cause most odors. So, a media filter or an electronic air cleaner will not be very effective at removing odors from cooking, pets, or smoke. To address odors, you need a system that is designed to handle gases and chemical vapors.

One of the best solutions for odor control is an air purifier that includes a layer of activated carbon in its filter. Activated carbon has a highly porous surface that is excellent at adsorbing and trapping odor-causing gas molecules. A whole-house filter that combines a high-MERV particulate filter with a substantial carbon filter can be very effective at reducing a wide range of household odors, leaving your home smelling fresher and cleaner.

Other technologies, such as certain types of ionizers or photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) systems, can also help to break down odor molecules. These are active forms of air purification that work to neutralize the odors in the air. If odor control is one of your primary concerns, be sure to discuss this with our air quality expert during your consultation. We can recommend the specific technology or combination of technologies that will be most effective at addressing the specific odors in your home.

The installation of a whole-house air purification system is a relatively quick and straightforward process for our trained technicians. For most systems, including a media air cleaner, an electronic air cleaner, or a UV light purifier, the installation can typically be completed in just a few hours. The work is confined to the area around your indoor furnace or air handler, so the disruption to your home is minimal.

The process involves our technician making a precise cut into your existing ductwork to install the cabinet for the new air purifier. The cabinet is then securely attached and sealed to the ductwork to ensure there are no air leaks. The technician will then handle the electrical wiring, connecting the unit to a power source, often from the furnace itself. We ensure all wiring is done safely and neatly, according to all electrical codes.

Once the unit is installed and wired, we will power it on and test it to ensure it is operating correctly. We will then install the initial filter or collector cells and show you how the system works and how to perform the simple required maintenance. We will clean up our work area completely before we leave. It is a simple, one-day home upgrade that can provide years of healthier air for your family.

Yes, a UV-C light air purifier is a proven and effective technology for neutralizing airborne microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, and mold spores. These systems use a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light, known as UV-C (254 nanometers), which is germicidal. When these microorganisms are exposed to a sufficient dose of UV-C light, the light penetrates their cell walls and damages their DNA and RNA. This damage makes it impossible for them to reproduce or cause infection. The germ is not physically removed from the air, but it is rendered harmless.

This technology has been used for decades for sterilization in hospitals, laboratories, and water treatment facilities. When installed in your home’s HVAC system, a UV light continuously sanitizes the air as it circulates. It is particularly effective at preventing the growth of mold and bacteria on the damp, dark surfaces of your indoor evaporator coil and drain pan. This is often called “coil irradiation” and it helps to keep your entire HVAC system cleaner and more sanitary, preventing that “dirty sock” smell some AC units can develop.

It is important to note that for a UV light to be effective, the contaminant must have direct line-of-sight exposure to the light for a certain amount of time. This is why proper installation by a professional is so important. We will install the lamp in the correct location in your ductwork to maximize the exposure time for the circulating air. A UV light system is an excellent layer of protection, especially when combined with a high-efficiency filter that can trap the larger particles.

For overall home air quality, a whole-house air purification system is vastly superior to one or more portable room air purifiers. A portable unit, even a good one, can only clean the air in the single room where it is located. It has no effect on the air quality in the rest of your house. To get coverage for your entire home, you would need to purchase multiple portable units, which can be expensive, noisy, and take up valuable floor space in each room.

A whole-house air purification system, on the other hand, is integrated directly into your central HVAC system. This means that every time your heating or cooling system’s fan is running, it is pulling air from every room in your house, cleaning it through a central, high-efficiency purifier, and then distributing the clean, purified air back to every room through your ductwork. It provides a continuous, comprehensive solution for your entire living space, not just one room.

Whole-house systems are also more powerful and require less maintenance than portable units. A whole-house media air cleaner’s filter might only need to be changed once a year, while the small filter in a portable unit may need to be changed every few months. Whole-house systems are also completely silent and out of sight. While a portable unit might be a good solution for a specific problem in a single room, if your goal is to improve the overall health of your home’s environment, a whole-house system is the far more effective and convenient choice.
