I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.

We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁

I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Common Prep Table Refrigeration Repair Questions

We understand that a broken prep table is a stressful emergency for your kitchen. Our goal is to provide clear answers to common repair questions. Below are answers to frequent inquiries from business owners.

If your refrigerated prep table is running but not getting cold enough to hold a food-safe temperature (41°F or below), it is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. The most common cause of this problem by far is a dirty condenser coil. The condenser coil is responsible for releasing heat from the unit. If it is clogged with grease and dust, it cannot do its job, and the refrigeration system will be unable to produce enough cooling. Our first step in any “not cooling” call is to inspect and, if necessary, thoroughly clean the condenser.

If the condenser is clean, the problem could lie with other components. The unit could be low on refrigerant due to a leak in the system. Our technicians can use electronic leak detectors to find and repair leaks. The evaporator fan motor, which circulates cold air inside the cabinet, could have failed. If the air is not moving, the unit will not cool properly. The door gaskets could also be torn or damaged, allowing warm air to constantly leak into the unit, overwhelming the cooling system.

Other potential causes include a faulty thermostat that is not reading the temperature correctly, a failing compressor that is losing its ability to pump refrigerant, or a blockage in the sealed refrigeration system. Because there are many potential culprits, a professional diagnosis is essential. Our technicians will systematically investigate the issue to find the exact reason your prep table is not cold enough and perform the correct repair to protect your food inventory.

If you notice that the compressor on your refrigerated prep table seems to be running constantly without ever cycling off, it is a clear sign that the unit is struggling to reach or maintain its set temperature. This is a serious symptom that will lead to very high energy bills and will cause the compressor to burn out prematurely if not addressed. As with most cooling issues, the most likely cause is a dirty condenser coil. A clogged condenser forces the compressor to run continuously because it can never efficiently get rid of its heat.

Another very common reason for a constantly running compressor is a bad door or drawer gasket. If the gasket is not sealing properly, warm kitchen air is continuously leaking into the unit. The refrigeration system is essentially trying to cool down your entire kitchen. It can never “catch up” and satisfy the thermostat, so the compressor just keeps running and running. We will inspect your gaskets and recommend replacement if they are faulty. This is a simple fix that can solve a major problem.

Other possibilities include a refrigerant leak, which would also make the system run constantly as it struggles to cool with a low charge. The thermostat could also be defective, constantly calling for cooling even when the unit is at the correct temperature. In some cases, the problem could be as simple as the unit being placed right next to a hot oven, or staff members propping the doors open for long periods. Our technicians will perform a full evaluation to determine why your compressor is not cycling and fix the underlying issue.

Ice buildup, especially on the evaporator coil (the part inside the cabinet that gets cold), is a common problem in refrigerated prep tables. This is usually a sign of an issue with airflow or the refrigeration system. Ironically, ice buildup prevents the unit from cooling properly. The ice acts as an insulator, preventing the air from coming into contact with the cold coil surface. This can cause the cabinet temperature to rise even as the coil itself becomes a solid block of ice.

One of the most frequent causes of ice buildup is restricted airflow. This could be due to a failed evaporator fan motor. If the fan is not blowing air across the coil, the moisture in the air will simply freeze onto the coil’s surface instead of being properly managed. Overstuffing the cabinet with product and blocking the airflow to and from the coil can also cause this problem. Damaged or poorly sealing door gaskets can also contribute by allowing excess moisture from the warm kitchen air to enter the unit and freeze onto the coil.

The problem could also be related to the refrigeration system itself. A system that is low on refrigerant due to a leak can cause the evaporator coil to run colder than usual, which can lead to excessive frosting. A faulty thermostat or a problem with the defrost system (on some models) can also be the culprit. Our technicians will first need to safely defrost the unit and then diagnose the root cause of the ice buildup to provide a permanent repair.

Water leaking onto the floor from your refrigerated prep table is a common and messy problem that needs to be fixed to prevent slip hazards and floor damage. The vast majority of the time, the cause is a clogged condensate drain line. As your prep table’s evaporator coil removes moisture from the air, it turns into water (condensate), which is collected in a pan and directed into a small drain tube. This tube leads to an evaporation pan near the hot compressor. If this small drain tube becomes clogged with food particles or slime, the water will back up and overflow, usually onto the floor.

Our technicians can quickly and easily clear a clogged condensate drain line using specialized tools. This is a very common and straightforward repair. Another possibility is that the condensate evaporation pan itself is cracked, rusted through, or has been knocked out of position, causing the water to spill. We will inspect the entire condensate removal system to ensure it is intact and functioning correctly.

In some cases, a leak can be a symptom of a more serious problem. If the evaporator coil is freezing up into a solid block of ice due to another issue, such as a refrigerant leak or a bad fan motor, a large amount of water can be produced when it eventually melts. This can overwhelm the drain system and cause a leak. Our diagnostic process will determine if the leak is a simple clog or a sign of a larger issue. We will fix the problem at its source.

Yes, absolutely. The doors and drawers on a refrigerated prep table are high-use items that can develop problems over time. A door that does not close or seal properly is a major issue, as it leads to massive energy waste and can prevent the unit from maintaining a safe temperature. We can repair a wide variety of door-related problems. One common issue is a worn-out or broken door gasket. We carry a variety of common gasket profiles on our trucks and can often replace a bad gasket on the spot.

Another frequent problem is with the door hinges or the self-closing mechanism. Over time, hinges can become loose, bent, or worn out, causing the door to sag and not line up correctly with the cabinet. This prevents the gasket from making a good seal. We can often adjust, tighten, or rebuild the hinges to correct the door’s alignment. If the self-closing mechanism is broken, we can repair or replace it to ensure the door closes automatically as it should, which is a key feature for maintaining temperature in a busy kitchen.

We can also address issues with the door frame itself or the drawer slides. Sometimes, the problem is as simple as the unit not being level, which causes the doors to swing open. Our technicians will diagnose the specific reason your door is not closing correctly and perform the right repair to restore a tight, energy-efficient seal. Fixing a faulty door is a cost-effective repair that can save you a lot of money on your electricity bill.

Yes, replacing a broken thermostat is a very common repair for our technicians. The thermostat is the brain of the prep table, responsible for sensing the temperature and telling the compressor when to turn on and off. If the thermostat fails, it can cause a wide range of problems. A faulty thermostat might cause the unit to run constantly, getting too cold, or it might not call for cooling at all, allowing the unit to get too warm. It can also cause erratic temperature swings.

We can repair or replace both mechanical and electronic thermostats. Our technician will first test your existing thermostat to confirm that it is the source of the problem. We use calibrated temperature reading devices to verify its accuracy. If the thermostat is indeed faulty, we can replace it with a high-quality, durable new part. We carry many common commercial thermostats on our service vehicles, allowing for a quick replacement.

After installing the new thermostat, we will carefully calibrate it to ensure your prep table is maintaining the precise temperature required for food safety. We will let the unit run and cycle several times to verify that the new thermostat is controlling the compressor correctly and holding a stable temperature. A new thermostat is often a relatively simple and affordable repair that can solve major performance and safety issues, restoring your prep table to reliable operation.

Any new or excessively loud noise from your refrigerated prep table is a sign that it needs to be looked at by a professional. The type of noise can often give a clue as to the source of the problem. A loud rattling or vibrating noise is often caused by a loose panel on the unit, or it could be a fan blade that is bent and hitting its housing. This could be either the condenser fan on the outside or the evaporator fan on the inside of the cabinet. Our technicians can quickly locate and fix this type of issue.

A high-pitched squealing or grinding noise is a more serious sign, and it almost always indicates a failing motor. This could be the condenser fan motor, the evaporator fan motor, or even the compressor itself. These sounds are often caused by worn-out bearings. It is important to address these noises immediately, as a failing motor can quickly seize up and cause the entire unit to stop cooling. Replacing a fan motor is a common repair that is much less expensive than dealing with the consequences of a full system shutdown.

If you hear a loud clicking or buzzing sound, especially when the unit is trying to start, it often points to an electrical problem. This could be a failing start relay or capacitor for the compressor. These components help the compressor start, and when they fail, the compressor may struggle or fail to turn on. Our technicians are experts at diagnosing both mechanical and electrical noises and can perform the right repair to get your unit running quietly and reliably again.
