They were outstanding. Super responsive without talking to some robot to schedule. They shot right over to the house right away when our AC wasn't working. You want to use them for super quick and great service!
Great company to work with! I felt like they were fair and honest. They were great at communicating with me and getting out to our place fast and working around our schedule! Will be using them again in the future!
I HIGHLY recommend going with Vortex Air HVAC. My original heater in my house (1989) was having issues. I watched a ton of videos and did everything to get it back and working with one caveat. Vortex came and took a look and realized it was a simple quick fix. He didn't charge me anything for it after I insisted I paid him. He then proceeded to to a quick diagnostic to verify everything was working correctly for free. Fantastic customer service. That simple act has won me over as a lifetime customer.
We contacted Vortex Air HVAC when we were installing a vent fan above our stove. The Vortex team came out, climbed up in our attic to cut a hole in our roof to install the ducting for it. Not only did they weather seal around their work, they cleaned the entire mess and was very friendly and professional. Now every year we have them come out and prep our furnace and A/C for the seasons. Thank you Vortex Air for excellent, professional and friendly service everytime. 😁
Quick response time, very knowledgeable, and great pricing. I definitely will be calling vortex next time!
I’ve waited a few weeks to post this review pending my full experience with Vortex air. Recently we had our ac go out, I had multiple big name and a few smaller companies out they all played the same game! Send a “tech” they tell me it’s bad few hours to a day later another “sales” man shows up to quote it.. I called these guys as I had just a coworker refer them. The Owner answered the phone and then showed up to my house within an hour! He then proceeded to give me all the options to even repair! He made thoughtful and valid suggestions on what we can really do to improve air quality as well. Day of install shows up and they were on time and had it all changed and running same day! Pricing was very competitive and not like getting the wind knocked out of you like all the other prices I got. 5 stars for service another 5 for the install and another 5 for the peace of mind we will have coming these next seasons. Thank you vortex!

Thermostat Installation Service
Our professional thermostat installation service is designed to help you gain better control over your home’s comfort and energy usage. The right thermostat can make a world of difference in how your HVAC system performs. Our service begins with a consultation to help you choose the best thermostat for your specific needs, your HVAC system, and your budget. We will explain the differences between programmable, non-programmable, and Wi-Fi enabled smart thermostats. Our goal is to help you select a thermostat that you will be comfortable using and that will deliver the best results for your home.
We specialize in the installation of modern smart thermostats from all the leading brands, such as Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell. A smart thermostat connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, allowing you to control your heating and cooling system from anywhere using your smartphone, tablet, or computer. These advanced thermostats offer features like learning algorithms that automatically create a schedule based on your habits, geofencing that adjusts the temperature when you leave and return home, and detailed energy usage reports. These features can help you save up to 15-20% on your heating and cooling costs.
A critical part of any thermostat installation is ensuring compatibility. Not all thermostats work with all types of HVAC systems. Our technicians are experts in determining the compatibility of a thermostat with your specific equipment, whether you have a standard furnace and AC, a multi-stage system, or a complex heat pump or dual-fuel system. We will ensure the thermostat we install can control all of your system’s functions correctly. This prevents performance issues and potential damage that can be caused by using an incompatible thermostat.
The physical installation process is performed with care and precision. Our technician will first safely turn off the power to your HVAC system. We will then remove your old thermostat and inspect the existing wiring. Many modern smart thermostats require a “C-wire,” or common wire, to provide a continuous source of power. If your home does not have a C-wire, our technicians can often run a new wire or install a special adapter to make the new thermostat work correctly. We will then mount the new thermostat’s base plate, connect the wires to the correct terminals, and attach the new thermostat faceplate.
Once the new thermostat is installed and the power is restored, our job is not done. We will then walk you through the entire setup and programming process. If it is a smart thermostat, we will help you connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi network and download the companion app to your smartphone. We will show you how to set up a basic schedule, create comfort settings, and use all the thermostat’s key features. Our goal is to ensure you feel completely comfortable and confident using your new device.
We will also thoroughly test the new thermostat to ensure it is communicating correctly with your HVAC system. We will run the system in all its modes, including heating, cooling, and the fan setting, to verify that the thermostat is sending the right signals. For a multi-stage or heat pump system, we will confirm that all stages of operation are being controlled properly. This final testing ensures that your new thermostat is working perfectly as the command center for your home’s comfort.
Upgrading your thermostat is a simple, affordable home improvement that provides an immediate return on investment through energy savings and improved comfort. A professional installation from Vortex Air HVAC guarantees that the job is done right, preventing the headaches and potential damage of a DIY mistake. Let our Orem experts help you take control of your comfort and your energy bills with a new, modern thermostat.

Common Thermostat Installation Questions
We understand you have questions about upgrading your thermostat. Our goal is to provide clear answers to help you make a smart choice for your home. Below are answers to frequent inquiries.
A programmable thermostat and a smart thermostat are both significant upgrades over a basic manual thermostat, but they have some key differences. A programmable thermostat is the more basic of the two. It allows you to create a set heating and cooling schedule based on time and day. For example, you can program it to lower the temperature while you are at work or asleep, and then raise it back to a comfortable level just before you get home or wake up. This “set it and forget it” scheduling can save you a significant amount of money by avoiding heating or cooling an empty home. However, the schedule is fixed and must be manually programmed by you.
A smart thermostat, also known as a Wi-Fi thermostat, takes things to the next level. Like a programmable thermostat, you can set schedules, but its key feature is its connectivity. It connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, which allows you to monitor and control your HVAC system from anywhere in the world using an app on your smartphone. This means you can adjust the temperature on your way home from vacation or check to see if you forgot to turn the AC up after you left the house.
Beyond remote access, smart thermostats have other advanced features. Many have “learning” capabilities, where they track your adjustments and automatically create an optimized schedule for you. They can use geofencing with your phone’s location to automatically enter an energy-saving “away” mode when you leave. They can also provide you with detailed energy usage reports, showing you how much your system runs and providing tips for more savings. A smart thermostat offers a much higher level of convenience, control, and potential energy savings than a standard programmable model.
The “C-wire,” which stands for “common wire,” is a low-voltage wire that provides a continuous, 24-volt source of power from your HVAC system to your thermostat. Older, simple thermostats, especially battery-powered ones, did not need a C-wire to function. However, most modern smart and Wi-Fi thermostats require a C-wire. The constant power from the C-wire is needed to run the thermostat’s advanced features, such as its backlit touchscreen display, its Wi-Fi radio, and its processor, without having to rely on batteries.
Whether you need a C-wire depends on the thermostat you choose. If your old thermostat wiring already has a C-wire (it is often a blue or black wire, but not always), then the installation is very straightforward. Our technician can simply connect it to the new thermostat. However, many older homes do not have a C-wire running from the furnace to the thermostat location. If this is the case, you have a few options to make a new smart thermostat work.
Our technicians can often pull a new thermostat wire bundle that includes a C-wire from your furnace to the thermostat, although this can sometimes be difficult depending on your home’s construction. A simpler solution in many cases is to use a special power adapter kit. These kits use the existing thermostat wires to deliver the necessary power without having to run a new wire. Our expert installers at Vortex Air HVAC can assess your existing wiring and implement the best and most reliable solution to power your new smart thermostat correctly.
Yes, absolutely. Upgrading from a basic, manual thermostat to a programmable or smart thermostat can save you a significant amount of money on your heating and cooling bills. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can save as much as 10% a year on your utility bills by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. A programmable or smart thermostat makes these savings automatic and effortless. By creating a schedule that lowers the temperature while you are away at work or asleep, you can ensure you are not wasting money heating or cooling an empty house.
A smart thermostat can offer even greater savings due to its advanced features. The geofencing feature can automatically detect when you have left the house and adjust to an energy-saving temperature, providing savings even when your schedule is unpredictable. The detailed energy reports they provide can help you understand your usage patterns and make smarter choices about your comfort settings. Some smart thermostats can even interact with your local utility’s demand-response programs, which can earn you additional rebates or bill credits for saving energy during peak demand periods.
The key to saving money with any thermostat is using its features correctly. A professional installation from Vortex Air HVAC includes a full tutorial where we show you how to program a schedule and use the energy-saving features of your new thermostat. The upfront cost of a new smart thermostat is often paid back in energy savings within just a year or two, making it one of the highest-return-on-investment home upgrades you can make.
While it might seem like a simple DIY project, we highly recommend having a professional technician install your new thermostat, especially if it is a modern smart thermostat. An improper installation can lead to several problems. The most common DIY mistake is mis-wiring the thermostat. Connecting the wrong wire to the wrong terminal can prevent your HVAC system from working correctly, or in a worst-case scenario, it can send a high-voltage signal to the wrong place and fry the sensitive control board in your furnace or air conditioner. This can turn a simple thermostat upgrade into a very expensive repair.
Another common issue is compatibility. A homeowner might purchase a thermostat that is not compatible with their specific type of HVAC system, such as a multi-stage system or a heat pump. Using an incompatible thermostat will mean you cannot access all of your system’s features, leading to poor comfort and efficiency. Our technicians are experts in identifying your system type and ensuring the thermostat we install is a perfect match.
We can also solve common installation hurdles, like the lack of a C-wire for power. Our technicians have the tools and expertise to run a new wire or install a power adapter kit correctly and safely. When you factor in the risks of damaging your HVAC system and the value of having an expert show you how to use the device correctly, a professional installation is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that the job is done right.
Determining if a thermostat is compatible with your HVAC system can be complex, as it depends on the type of system you have. The first step is to identify your system. Do you have a standard gas furnace and a separate central air conditioner? Or do you have an all-in-one heat pump system? Is your equipment single-stage (meaning it is either 100% on or off) or is it multi-stage (meaning it has different levels of output, like low and high)? Do you have a dual-fuel system that combines a heat pump and a furnace?
Each of these system types requires a thermostat with specific capabilities and wiring terminals. For example, a heat pump requires a thermostat with terminals like “O/B” to control the reversing valve and “Y1” and “Y2” for multiple stages. A standard furnace and AC system does not use these. A dual-fuel system requires an even more advanced thermostat with special logic to control both heat sources.
The easiest way to ensure compatibility is to consult with a professional HVAC technician. Our team at Vortex Air HVAC can quickly identify your system type and recommend a range of thermostats that are guaranteed to be compatible. When you purchase a thermostat for us to install, we take all the guesswork out of the process. We will ensure the new thermostat can control every feature of your specific heating and cooling equipment, so you get the maximum comfort and efficiency you are paying for.
Yes, a faulty thermostat is one of the potential causes of an HVAC system short cycling. Short cycling is when your furnace or air conditioner turns on and off in very short, frequent bursts. This is very inefficient and causes a lot of wear and tear on your equipment. One way the thermostat can cause this is if it has a faulty temperature sensor. If the sensor is not reading the room temperature correctly, it might think the target temperature has been reached very quickly and shut the system off prematurely, only to turn it back on again a few minutes later.
The location of the thermostat can also be a cause. If the thermostat is installed in a location where it is exposed to a direct heat source, like direct sunlight from a window, a nearby lamp, or a vent blowing hot air directly on it, it will heat up quickly. This will trick the thermostat into thinking the whole room is warm and will cause it to shut the system off too early. Conversely, if it is in a drafty location, it might run for too long.
Other causes of short cycling are often related to the HVAC equipment itself, such as a clogged filter or an oversized system. However, the thermostat is always one of the first things a technician will check when diagnosing a short cycling issue. Our technicians can test the thermostat’s calibration and check its location to determine if it is the source of the problem. Sometimes, simply relocating the thermostat to a better spot on the wall can solve the issue.
A standard thermostat installation is a very quick and non-invasive service. For a straightforward replacement where the wiring is already in place and is compatible with the new thermostat, our technicians can typically complete the entire installation in under an hour. This includes turning off the power, removing the old unit, wiring and mounting the new one, and then turning the power back on to test it.
The installation may take a bit longer if we need to address a C-wire issue. If we need to run a new thermostat wire from the furnace to the thermostat location, this could add an hour or two to the job, depending on how difficult it is to fish the new wire through your walls. If we are able to use a power adapter kit, this usually only adds about 15 to 30 minutes to the installation time.
Even with these potential additions, a thermostat installation is almost always completed in a single, short visit. We will also factor in time to help you set up your new thermostat, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and show you how to use the app. Our goal is to provide an efficient and complete service that leaves you with a perfectly functioning new thermostat and the knowledge to use it effectively.
There are several excellent brands on the market that are leaders in smart thermostat technology. The three most popular and highly-regarded brands are Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell. Google Nest thermostats are known for their sleek, modern design and their powerful learning capabilities. The Nest Learning Thermostat can automatically learn your schedule and preferences over time, creating a program for you without you having to do much work. They also have a very user-friendly app interface.
Ecobee smart thermostats are another top choice, and their standout feature is their use of remote room sensors. An Ecobee thermostat comes with small, wireless sensors that you can place in different rooms throughout your house. The thermostat can then read the temperature in those specific rooms, not just at the thermostat’s location. This allows it to make smarter decisions to eliminate hot and cold spots and to average the temperature across multiple rooms for a more balanced comfort. This is a fantastic feature for larger or multi-story homes.
Honeywell is a long-standing and trusted name in thermostats, and their line of Wi-Fi smart thermostats is also excellent. They offer a wide range of models with various features, and they are known for their reliability and compatibility with a huge range of HVAC systems. Our technicians at Vortex Air HVAC are experienced in installing and setting up thermostats from all of these leading brands. We can discuss the specific features of each with you and help you choose the one that is the best fit for your home and lifestyle.
